iMacros is a Firefox add-on from iOpus which allows you to record and edit macros as you visit and interact with a web page. These scripts can be used for link building to visit web sites that generate an indexable web page based on a domain name.
To perform my technique, we will use iMacros to open a URL. Actually, we will use it to generate a bunch of URLs one after another once the current page loads. The following is just one method of link building with iMacros:
- Make sure you are in Firefox.
-
Bookmark this post so you can come back easily.
- Install the iMacros addon.
- You need to restart like all add-ons.
- iMacros should be open in your sidebar, if not, then go to Tools > Add-ons and click on it.
- Save the list to your computer as OneWayLinks.iim (.iim is extension for iMacro scripts) to the location listed under Folder Macros listed when you click on the third pane Edit then Options.
- Open that file. If you domain name is www.example.com, then replace DOMAINNAME with only your site’s domain name (ie: example) and replace TLD with the top level domain of your domain (ie: com).
- Click on the third pane Edit then Refresh Macro List.
- Once you refreshed the list then you should see the macro listed, click on the first pane Play and then the Play button.

Now sit back and watch the magic. iMacros will load the first page and will wait until the it is completely loaded until moving on to the next one.
A nice way to test the effectiveness of this technique is to create a Google Alert with your domain as the Search Term. Within a day or so, you should see your link on the sites from the list. Granted these aren’t going to be a super high quality, but it should help your link building efforts.
This should be your feet wet with iMacros and it’s possibilities. If you have any other ways you use the add-on or know of sources to build one way links that would be appropriate for the script, let me know.

Great tip… how do you find more sites that would accept this technique?
January 5th, 2011 at 1:19 pm
@Dave Hi Dave, the technique I used to find many of those sites is to take the domain name of a website and do a Google search for it. For example, if I search for “jasonbartholme.com”, I get a bunch of results, but I can look at the results and see which ones are simply my domain name appended to a URL. From my result set, I see my domain name in this URL (www.websitedescription.com/jasonbartholme.com). Now, we may have a winner. The way to check this is to visit the site and change the domain name at the end of the URL to a different domain name. If you see relevant content for the domain you entered or a message saying the domain provided will be added shortly, then this site is a winner. If not, then move on to another site with your original domain name in someone else’s URL. I recommend using either competitors domain names or even the domain names of Web sites outside of your sector to find obscure link sources. Let know if you would like clarification or more examples.

Thanks for this post - but I’m confused about #6 -
“Save the list to your computer as OneWayLinks.iim (.iim is extension for iMacro scripts) to the location listed under Folder Macros listed when you click on the third pane Edit then Options.”
Save what list? There are no lists here - Just Demos? Save my list of links? And then run the macro?

Thanks for the list of sites! I had a database of my own websites I wanted to run this against so I wrote some C# to do it and just let the bad boy run. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome from some new backlinks!
Thinking about it, I could probably add it to a controller and let people hit it with their own URLs… useful to anyone do you think?
