New Hybrid Search Engine Looks Promising
A few days ago someone told me about a new search engine called Younanimous. Although it is still beta, the engine seems to be on the right track to attracting a loyal user base.
The initial search page is uncluttered and pretty basic. You not bombarded with news, ads and useless junk you don’t need. So far they have two tabs, one for “Web” and the other for “Images”. They say that a video search is in the works.
Once you search you see a neatly organized SERP which tells you the term’s rank in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Across the bottom of the result, you can see the site’s domain name, Page Rank and Alexa rating. There are links to view the site’s approximate number of visitors and if the site is trusted based on the data from compete.com. There are social bookmarking links to submit the page to Reddit, del.icio.us, Furl and Digg.
The SERP uses AJAX to quickly re-sort the results by their own ranking or by the position in Google, Yahoo, MSN, Page Rank, and Alexa.
The site is still in beta so, for the time being, you only have one page of results. There are also a green plus and red minus that give the message of “coming soon” when clicked.
Other nifty features:
- You can install a Firefox search plugin that sits in top right of your browser.
- Ability to block entire domains from the SERP.
- Promise of an API to develop your own widgets and algorithms.
- An account that remembers your preferences.
- Future ability to vote results to appear higher in the SERP
They say they are ready for the hordes of black hat SEOs that will come in and try to game the results. They add that the architecture is “impervious to manipulation”. We’ll see how that goes. All and all, I really like this Younanimous and think that it has potential. One minor feature, I would like to see is the addition of a StumbleUpon.com link in the results next the other social buttons.

Jason,
Thank-you for the review and hope you continue to use and enjoy younanimous.
Regarding your comment around Stumble Upon, we actually offer Stumble Upon for display within the results(however not by default). If you open the Settings window from the search page and go to the ‘Result Display’ tab you can select Stumble Upon from there and have it displayed in your results.
If you have any more feedback I would love to heard it.
Ron.
Thanks for your post response Ron. Like I said before, I think your engine had a lot of potential. I found the StumbleUpon feature. That makes it the SERP that much more better.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks Jason. If you have a further feedback please send it along as we are trying to improve what we have in as many ways as we can. Any and all opinions are welcome! =)
