Not Another Link Directory

link directoryIt’s been said by more than one person that there are too many link directories on the Internet, but I believe it needs one more clogging the tubes. So, I give the world MyDirectoryLive.com.

I frequent the Solicitations and Announcements forum on Digital Point at least a few times a week to look for new directories to submit my sites. It’s quick link building and it offers a small trickle of traffic. After, almost a year of submitting my sites to these directories I have decided to start my own.

The script

A majority of the link directory sites are based on the PHP Link Directory script. I decided to go with the masses and give it a try. They offer two prices for their script. $25 if you leave their link in the footer of your directory and $75 without the link. I opted for the latter just because of the price. With the price of the script and the domain name, I am out about $35 total.

The Installation

Installing the phpLD was quite easy. Once I transfered my domain, I defined a database in the MySQL admin in my DreamHost account. Then, I uploaded the files to the server, ran through a short wizard and the directory was up and running.

The Customization

Once the script was installed, I needed to popular the categories. So far, this has been the most laboriest part of the managing the directory. I found a site that had general topics and copied theirs manually.

A quick tip if you populate the categories on your own, add your major categories first. Then, populate those categories from the bottom up. This will reduce the amount of scrolling to find the major category.

Once I got all the categories installed, I found this category script that would install the categories in one click. Oh well, I’ll know better next time.

I set the directory to use PayPal to accept payment for the featured links that appear at the top of the each category. $10 for a featured link was just a random number I pulled out. I don’t expect to sell very many of those listings until the directory gets Page Rank.

Disregard the logo. I my graphics guy is working on a new one. That was just a slap-dash replacement for the time being.

The Promotion

The directory has been running for less than 24 hours, but I have already received over 500 link submissions. I advertised on a few sites to get this many. Here are the sites where I promoted the directory:

The Pandering

So how about submitting your site to the directory? It takes a few minutes and I will approve them as quick as I receive the notification. When you get done, give my a quick review on the Directory Critic site.

The Incentive

Tell you what. Since your a nice bunch, I’ll promote the first ten sites to featured that submit to the directory and post the URL in the comments below. Limit one link per person. You people are a tough sell, but I love ya anyway.

I populated the categories manually. It was a pain, but thankfully a one-time process.
